Michigan's poor battle through recession
Michigan is struggling through the tail end of the global recession, unemployment is up, salaries have been cut, the state government is confronted with reduced tax revenue and increased welfare costs while Michigan’s most vulnerable residents, the low to lower middle class income earners, fall through an already over-burdened social net.
One of the social organisations on the frontline of these socio-economic trends is the Food Bank Council of Michigan, a group funded partly by government, but predominantly through donations of food and money by the public. According to the group’s website, the vast majority, over 90%, of financial donations go towards the purchase and distribution of food, with the remainder taken up by administrative costs. Read more
